In Republic to empire a light battalion of 32 men can be in either in limited (4 skirmish bases)/half (8 skirmish bases)/full deployment (12 skirmish bases). For varity I'm going to make my skirmish bases as a mix of flank and line companies.

I have another six bases as wip and we will also use theese bases for Sharpes practice.

Greetings!

To get things going before the autumn season starts, with increased activity, I wish to present my finished prussian Schützen! This battalion represents one of two in the prussian army and I will use it as an avant garde for my infantry battalions. The models are all Perry miniatures, plastic volunteer jägers slightly converted and painted with black cuffs, turnbacks and collars with red piping. I have also added a metal bugler from the prussian skirmishing fusilier command on one of the bases. Of course a special battalion like this needs someone to blow the jägerhorn! Hopefully these men will be able to make up for some of my lack of light troops.

There has been a long time since we updated the blog and we have both had many things to do during summer. Trips around Europe, work and other leisures have come in the way for further wargame progress. This summer I am also working at the Royal palace of Stockholm, serving His majesty the king, and thouroughly enjoying myself with my cultural-historical work.

Tonight I visited some friends here in Stockholm to play a game of ancient 15mm. Sassanid persians versus Armenians. A battle which started of good (for me and my comrades persians) but ended in an embarrassing defeat for the persian aswaran noble cavalry. Lesson learned: don't underestimate mountain dwelling christians! Anyway, after the game the other guys wanted to know more about our blog here and I showed them what we had done. They got really interested and my own wargaming fire got some more fuel. I really look forward to continuing the work with my prussians when I return up north in Umeå. A weekly painting night or two will do wonders to my growing division if I can find the time between university studies, historical reenacting, outdoor living and travelling. I hope to finish up with a few more units quite quickly so that another nice game of Republic to Empire can be played with Anders the elder.

I may have the time and energy to post something more while I work here in the capital. If not, I will be back in Umeå in mid-august.

Kindest regards,

Greetings, I just wanted to show you some work in progress of my Line artillery battery. The plan is to have three 6pdrs and one howitzer on four bases. In republic to empire you have a zone behind the artillery where no units can deploy or move around so I have started to draw up my ideas for the four bases occuping that zone.

Greetings!

Recently I have been working on my prussian schützen batalion. After some thinking about what I should use to balance Anders the elders Légère I decided to go for a full skirmish unit of Schützen. I may also field a similar unit of freiwillige Jägers in the future. These are mostly Perry plastics, but the bugler is metal. I figured I should have him since it makes more sense for an independent unit to actually have officers, NCO's and a bugler. There are also some convertions, mainly of the headgear so that they look a bit more unregulated. The officer has got the appropriate golden cord hanging between button and shoulder board.

The things I enjoyed most with this unit were to paint green (instead of dark blue...), to do the red piping (which is not always seen) and the black leather. A welcome break from the blue and grey.

After a period of dark swedish winter and a bit of travelling we are back! Anders the elder visited Belgium and France during the winter holidays and I have been in Bavaria for quite some time now. As work and studies continue as normal for the time being, we are back on track with our napoleonics project.

Previously we mentioned some of the projects we would take on starting 2013. I have now basecoated a detachement of Schützen and also started on one more converted Landwehr battalion, and some grenadier skirmish bases. Moreover, there is a fusilier battalion waiting to be put together. Anders the elder has been very productive when it comes to terrain and now once again turns his eye toward the french Légère regiment. We will order some more miniatures from Perry miniatures by the beginning of next month and I am also interested in some Calpe officers for my prussians.

We will update with more pictures and reports on our modelling, painting and gaming during the coming weeks.

Salutations!

Now when we both have mustered one infantry brigade each we can start trying out the rules and mechanics of Republic to Empire. In this first battle we saw an infantry brigade compromised of four infantry battalions. With limited cavalry support of one squadron. Facing of in the fields of Sachsen.

Although sometimes the game mechanics were a bit hard to follow, we still find the rules to provide a fun and interesting experience which match our (slightly romanticised) view of the battles of the Napoleonic wars. The Order system forces you to think ahead and also focus on the logistics of battle. It can easily become hard to deploy or make movements if slight mistakes are made early on. And battalions can be immobilised if something goes wrong.

Our battle began with a hard French right hook that pushed the Prussian infantry back. Later, the Prussian hussars managed to get around the French left flank, attacking the rear of the infantry brigade. This led to the disintegration of the French forces on that bloody day.

We know now, after the battle, that we made a few mistakes and misread the rules on occasion. It was, however a really fun battle containing cinematic events. Such as the French line infantry climbing over the hedge and walking steadily across the mud field, under fire from Prussian Landwehr. Or the massive French attack columns breaking the 1st Silesian infantry battalion, forcing them into a fighting retreat. Our initial plans were quickly swept from the table as the battle soon got a life of its own. We consider this to be the greatest strength of this ruleset. We look forward to future divisional engagements!

Right now, Anders the younger is finished with the line infantry of his Silesian regiment, and starting in January he will move on to fusiliers, more Landwehr and cavalry. Some smaller detachments of Jägers or skirmishers as well as officers will also be prioritised. Anders the elder will start on a light infantry regiment, line artillery and a few surprises...

Until next time, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New year!

My prussian forces are growing steadily and after trying Republic to Empire I have become more keen on painting all of my infantry to see them charge the french lines in blue-black glory. Here are some pictures of what I am currently working with.

I thought that would share a video of our last reenactment of light infantry skirmishes outside of Uppsala from october. Me and some friends from our reenacting group here in Umeå went down in our russian uniforms to give the swedes a beating. This is filmed from the russian perspective, except from the ending when our camera man was captured! The link will open up in a new window.

An quick uppdate on the terrain that will give life to our 1,22m x 2,44m table and I would really like to hear your feedback on it.

I had some real problems with finding a good base material for roads as I needed something not to thick and that was easy to work with. After a bit of trial and error I settled on 3mm cork tile with spackling paste for texture.

Here is another update with pictures. This time three of my finished prussian mounted colonels. Moreover, I am also painting two battalions of silesian musketeers right now while I wait for several orders to come in. Ardous work, but necessary. Right now the two assembled battalions are in three stages of painting. The first battalion is halfway done, with the other half basecoated in blue, grey and browns. The second battalion is just blue and grey so far. I'm trying out a new painting technique consisting of mounting half of the battalion on a stick, painting them, then moving on to the next stick. This is just to be more effective when I sit down to paint. I will remember to show you next update!

I am currently scouting for my divisional (prussian brigade) command. I might place an order from Calpe miniatures next month. However, I have alot do do until then. An early october trip to Stockholm, or rather Kungsängen - the Swedish Royal Life Guards practice area, to reenact woodland skirmishes between russian and swedish/finnish troops in the war of 1808-1809. Later in october I will go to Bavaria for a week to get a break from my historical studies at the university and to experience wonderful german culture. Hurra!

Without further ado, here are the gentlemen:

Hello everyone!

At last me and Anders are back from a summer of work. I have had a great two months working at the Royal Court, at the Royal Palace in Stockholm and the Riddarholm cathedral to be more precise. On my spare time I've been occupied with planning historical reenacting and enjoying the swedish summer 700 kilometers south of our headquarters in Umeå. Anders the elder has been working at a local pre-school and trying out a game called Dropzone commander. Now when I have returned we immediately continued with our napoelonics project. This means that you will hear alot more from us in the future.

I am currently working on my first squadron of the 2nd Silesian hussars, putting the first coats of paint on them after the convertions. I've also glued together an additional two battalions of musketeers that are to be basecoated next time i sit down with my prussians. Anders the elder has been productive when it comes to terrain. Many hedges and trees have been finished the last week and his next project is french light infantry in nice all-blue uniforms.

We both look forward to a great and productive autumn and hope that you will enjoy our progress!

Kindest regards,

Here you have the promised guide on how to make the trees and please ask if there is anything you want to know more about.

What you need:

Hot glue gun
Super glue
Woodland scenic 3"-6" trees
Woodland scenic bushes tufts (I have used medium green and light green)
Brown spray color
Light brown paint
Some form of Poly fiber (The one I use is from other company but the principle is the same)
50mm plywood bases

Step one - Step two - Step three

Step one: first I basecoat the trees with a dark/medium brown and then give them a heavy
drybrush using a lighter brown. Then using the hot glue gun I attach the
poly fiber between the the outer branches.

Step two: Using the poly fiber as a base I start hot gluing the medium green tuft material to the branches making sure to get some volume on there.

Step three: Switching now to super glue, I use it and the light green tufts to reinforce the medium green foliage making sure that there is no loose foilage and to cover any seems and branches sticking out.

Last step is to do finish the base in the same way as I do my french infantry but without the vallejo sandy paste.

I have just returned from a visit to the great capital city of the Kingdom of Sweden. Stockholm. I've been at the Royal palace, training for my upcoming work there this summer. I will be working through june, july and half of august but I will bring some stuff to model and paint while I'm away from my beloved Västerbotten and Umeå. Hopefully I'll be able to update from Stockholm with some extra posts about the historical city.

I just thought that you should know what's going on, there will be more updates next week we assure you.

Kindest regards,
Hi,

Received two out of three orders containing supplies for my table so I could start doing some gardening.

The result

I'm very happy with how they turned out and have already started the next batch so by the time we do a update it will be an entire forest.

The hedge is based on a 14cm wooden strip and the tree is on a 50mm plywood base, behind the hedge are two test models for a future leger battalion for scale.

Cheers,

Sorry no pictures this weekend because of life coming in the way, or in Anders the younger's case a cottage.

But we got some things done:

I have now finished the 24 line infantry you have seen in the WIP pictures so now there is only 18 models left to be done in the Bardin brigade. I have also started with two test figures for a Legre brigade and the result looks promising.

Anders the younger have started basing the West Prussian grenadier battalion and finished the assembling of 11 more Prussian Hussars, He just need to get some green stuffing done.

We have done some talking and decided to start with the table this month. I went down to the game store today and picked up a Games workshop citadel battlemat. We also have put in an order for 28 woodland scenic 3-6 inch trees and a lot of foilage, and silfor tufts.

The plan with the table is to make it very modular and well go into the details of that later but basically the plan is this:

STAGE 1
Trees and Hedges
STAGE 2
Roads, hills and rivers
STAGE 3
Large farm house

So stay tuned in.

Regards,
